MONTROSE. Whether you crave a quiet evening with friends or an energy-laden excursion to meet new ones, Bartini stands ready. The dual-purposed club features a downstairs dance floor, revved up with rhythmic tunes and flashing lights, while upstairs, a lounge offers terrific views and a calming place to imbibe and indulge in a cigar. A downstairs patio also makes for good mingling, affording glimpses of all the folks who pass by. Other perks at the gay-friendly club include drink specials and pool tables.

RIVER OAKS. For an authentic Houston experience, head to Blanco's and see what a real Texas honky-tonk is made of. The place isn't large, but it's packed with character, and you'll find some of the area's best bands playing country tunes to appreciative audiences. If your skills are up to par, show off your two-stepping on the dance floor; otherwise, you might just want to knock off a Lone Star on the patio or sample barbecue and chicken-fried chicken. Lots of regulars hang out here ­ a sure sign there's something good to be had.

MIDTOWN. Although it's been around for more than 30 years, BRB continues to thrive, thanks to its focus on country and western music and its appeal with the two-stepping gay community. Lots of folks attend its weekly events, whether they hit the dance floor, shoot a few rounds of pool, or simply prop up the bar, cold beer in hand. You can be assured of a friendly welcome when you come, and you'll likely be inclined to try out your karaoke skills or even capitalize on Thursday night's dance lessons. Busy and popular.

THE HEIGHTS. Boasting live music five nights a week, Cosmos delivers a double-whammy of great food and incredible performances. While you're indulging in tasty sandwiches or hot entrees, treat yourself to the skills of talented folks who regale patrons with everything from jazz and swing to blues and rockabilly. The bands Cosmos books are eminently danceable, so when guests are moved to their feet, it's absolutely welcomed, and you'll find plenty of people doing just that. A good bar selection is an added plus.

MANVEL. This family entertainment hall lies in Manvel, about 20 minutes away from the Astrodome. Houstonians from every part of town drive out to boot-scoot and to enjoy live music. Food and beer are available, as are private party reservations. The place occupies 25,000 square feet, and 4000 square feet of that is dance floor.
